NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT SCIENCE CAMP

SCIENTIFIC CONTENT:

National Environment Science Camp 2018-19 is a tribute to four Great Naturalists, of both antiquity and modernity, who might not have achieved great fame, but their work is seminal and their lives truly extraordinary. They are:

  1. Jivaka: a botanist, herbalist and ayurvedic physician in ancient India
  2. Dr MS Mani: a great entomologist
  3. Dr Salim Ali: ornithologist and conservationist
  4. Henry David Thoreau: American writer and philosopher

Jivaka, possibly, lived somewhere in the very Terai region of which Dudhwa is a part.
Dr Mani conducted thorough field work on insects in high mountains in India (Himalayas) and abroad (Pamirs and Caucasus).
Dr Salim Ali extensively explored far-flung Himalayas, deserts, Western Ghats and evergreen forests, searching every nook and cranny for birds.
Henry David Thoreau lived hermit-like near ponds, rivers and forests in mid- 19th century America. He rebelled against relentless destruction of the vast wilderness brought about by industrialisation.

The central objective of the National Environment Science Camp (NEVSC) 2018-19 is to experience jungle much alike these great Naturalists
